Above the Lake
Before biking around about 3/5 of Lake Constance I took advantage of the nice late summer weather and biked up to the local mountain of Bregenz – Pfänder – as well as to Dreiländerblick – a view of the three countries bordering on Lake Constance – to check out from above what I was getting myself into.
Around the Lake Day 1:
Bregenz – Arbon
After my Tirolean friends arrived late afternoon we started our bike adventure towards the Swiss shore of Lake Constance. After crossing the border and both of the mouths of the Rhine river we stopped in Rorschach to check out the sand sculptures there.
After biking about 37 km we arrived in Arbon and enjoyed a nice evening near the lake.
Around the Lake Day 2:
Arbon – Stein am Rhein
We were greated by a very promising sunrise and after breakfast we started our almost 65 km bike ride to Stein am Rhein.
Besides having to stop at countless railroad crossings, because bike path and rail road intersect quite frequently here, we took in the beauty of Lake Constance and its surrounding mountains in Romanshorn.
We stopped in Mannenbach for a fantastic lunch, hung out at the lido in Steckborn (where I finally took a swim in (lower) Lake Constance and not just dipping my feet) and arrived tired but happy in Stein am Rhein where we enjoyed a warm summer night.
Stein am Rhein is a Swiss city with cute medieval half-timbered houses located where lower Lake Constance ends and the Rhine river runs seperately again.
Around the Lake Day 3:
Stein am Rhein – Diessenhofen – Schaffhausen – Konstanz
Our first bike and boat day started of sunny and after breakfast we said Goodbye to Stein am Rhein and biked along the Rhine river to Diessenhofen where we entered a cruise to Schaffhausen. Unfortunately we did not have time to go and check out the impressing Rhine falls there.
After returning to Diessenhofen, Switzerland we hopped back on our bikes to continue the about 55 km total ride to Constance, Germany occassionally stopping to take in the view and get some rest for our legs before biking through the busy city.
We celebrated our last night at Lake Constance with a great dinner at the hotel we stayed including a nice view of the lake.
Around the Lake Day 4:
Konstanz – Mainau – Bregenz
(average size male for size)
Our final day started with a sumptuous breakfast buffet before biking up to Mainau – the flower island founded by Swedish royalty in 1930.
After exploring, flowers, trees and butterflies there we biked down to Constance’s port to hop on the first of two large motor vessels bringing us back to Bregenz where we finished the a little less than 20 km final part of our trip.
